Ruddhasangeet

The first theatrical production hosted by Bratyajon is Ruddhasangeet (2009). Ruddhasangeet gets its title from Rabindrasangeet exponent Debabrata Biswas’s autobiography Bratyajoner Ruddhasangeet. Basu looks up to Debabrata Biswas for the latter’s courage to take on the establishment for his artistic freedom, for what he believed in. Debabrata Biswas’s struggles have had a tremendous impact on Basu’s growing up. Basu could relate to Biswas’s life struggles as an artist as he believes in the independence of the creative spirit and conscience, where an artist’s expressions and representations may create insecurity for those in power who are used to disallowing such expressions to flourish. The play therefore symbolizes not only Debabrata Biswas’s resistance against prevailing power system, but raises a voice for the autonomy of those relegated to the margins.
